On our drive back to Worcester, I felt pretty optimistic. An eveningâs rummaging through online records would hopefully give me the name of the propertyâs owner or the architect who drew up the plans for the planning application and then I should be able to find out all sorts of other information. If none of that led me to Bea then Iâd just have to doorstep him at his home or office, depending on what I could turn up.
Given how careful heâd been to keep Beatrice a secret from his wife, the threat of blowing his life apart would encourage him to tell me everything. If he wouldnât or couldnât, then at least Iâd have some leverage with which to persuade the police to take Beaâs disappearance seriously. Iâd go back to Albert Road the following evening, I decided. If no-one was in, Iâd find a way into the garden and have a look around.
âYouâre quiet.â We were halfway home, stopping and starting in the rush-hour traffic and Mum still hadnât spoken, although in my peripheral vision Iâd caught her looking at me a couple of times. I hoped I wasnât in trouble for fibbing to the neighbours.
âJust thinking.â
âAbout what?â
âAbout you. Iâve never really thought about your job before but Iâve seen you in a new light this afternoon. Tracking people down and finding things out. Making progress.â
âLying through my teeth.â
âThat too. As a parent, you donât think of your children as being knowledgeable and competent. Even Anna, sheâs a doctor but I still struggle sometimes to accept that she knows what sheâs talking about.â
âAnd you donât know enough about my life to see that Iâm good at my job?â
âExactly. But Iâm starting to understand that you get things done.â
âI try. But with Bea, it feels as though Iâm just chasing shadows.â
We fell quiet again, but as I looked out at the sea of red lights in front of me, I hoped that today Iâd given a form to at least a couple of those shadows and that I was a little closer to finding Beatrice.
