On our drive back to Worcester, I felt pretty optimistic. An evening’s rummaging through online records would hopefully give me the name of the property’s owner or the architect who drew up the plans for the planning application and then I should be able to find out all sorts of other information. If none of that led me to Bea then I’d just have to doorstep him at his home or office, depending on what I could turn up.

Given how careful he’d been to keep Beatrice a secret from his wife, the threat of blowing his life apart would encourage him to tell me everything. If he wouldn’t or couldn’t, then at least I’d have some leverage with which to persuade the police to take Bea’s disappearance seriously. I’d go back to Albert Road the following evening, I decided. If no-one was in, I’d find a way into the garden and have a look around.

“You’re quiet.” We were halfway home, stopping and starting in the rush-hour traffic and Mum still hadn’t spoken, although in my peripheral vision I’d caught her looking at me a couple of times. I hoped I wasn’t in trouble for fibbing to the neighbours.

“Just thinking.”

“About what?”

“About you. I’ve never really thought about your job before but I’ve seen you in a new light this afternoon. Tracking people down and finding things out. Making progress.”

“Lying through my teeth.”

“That too. As a parent, you don’t think of your children as being knowledgeable and competent. Even Anna, she’s a doctor but I still struggle sometimes to accept that she knows what she’s talking about.”

“And you don’t know enough about my life to see that I’m good at my job?”

“Exactly. But I’m starting to understand that you get things done.”

“I try. But with Bea, it feels as though I’m just chasing shadows.”

We fell quiet again, but as I looked out at the sea of red lights in front of me, I hoped that today I’d given a form to at least a couple of those shadows and that I was a little closer to finding Beatrice.
